A village of few hotels, all of them serious

Gstaad has resisted the tower-hotel arms race of other Alpine resorts. Its accommodation follows the village's own logic: a handful of great houses, each with a distinct personality and its own piece of geography, surrounded by chalets. That geography is the part guides usually skip — and it is the part we know best, because we drive it daily. Where your hotel sits determines how your mornings, dinners and ski days actually work.

The three great houses

Gstaad Palace — the icon on the hill

The turreted silhouette that is Gstaad on every postcard, presiding from its own hill since 1913. The Palace is tradition performed at the highest level: grand public rooms, generations of returning families, the GreenGo club downstairs in winter. From the driver's seat: the climb up Palacestrasse takes two minutes by car and considerably more on foot with shopping bags — guests here use a car more than they expect. The Alpina Gstaad — the modern great house

When it opened in 2012 — the first grand hotel built in Gstaad in about a century — The Alpina chose the Oberbort hillside and a different register: contemporary Alpine craft, serious art, and the Six Senses Spa that many guests plan their stay around. It draws a slightly younger great-house crowd and long-stay residence guests. Same logistics truth as the Palace: its hillside is part of its magic and part of its geography. Le Grand Bellevue — the life of the village

The third great house took the opposite bet: the very center of the village, steps from the Promenade, the chapel and the station — with a playful, house-party spirit that stands apart from its hillside neighbours. If you want to walk out of the lobby into Gstaad itself, this is the one. The addresses beyond the big three

Park Gstaad offers five-star calm at the edge of the village with generous grounds — a favourite of guests who want space without a hillside. ERMITAGE Wellness- & Spa-Hotel in Schönried, up the sunny terrace above Gstaad, is the wellness heavyweight of the valley and sits close to the Horneggli lift. HUUS Gstaad, above Saanen, reinvented the relaxed family hotel for the region — guides, gear and children genuinely welcome. Golfhotel Les Hauts de Gstaad in Saanenmöser puts the Rinderberg slopes practically at the door. And on the Promenade itself, the historic Hotel Olden remains the boutique choice with the village's most storied façade.

The logistics nobody mentions

Three practical truths from years of these driveways. First, every one of these addresses is roughly the same distance from the airports — about 2 h 15 from Geneva and 2 h 45 from Zurich — so choose on character and location within the valley, not on the transfer. Second, the hillside hotels reward having a car on call far more than guests anticipate; the village ones barely need it except at the edges of the stay.
